laser hair removal dark black skin

At Epilia, we are delighted to present our Nd:YAG laser, specially designed to meet the needs of clients with dark or black skin. This relates to clients with skin phototypes 5 and 6.

World-renowned as the benchmark standard in dermatological laser hair removal, our Candela laser offers a safe and effective solution for all, men and women, whatever the area of the body to be treated.

The Nd:YAG laser, with its 1064 nm wavelength, is the perfect solution for clients with dark or black skin types. Thanks to its capacity to penetrate deeper beneath the surface of the skin without exceeding the dermis, it effectively targets the hair root by focusing on the micro-vessels responsible for growth, without affecting the skin’s melanin.

This approach considerably reduces the risk of skin burns, thereby ensuring safe and protected laser hair removal for dark skin types.

If you have dark skin and are considering a YAG laser treatment, you can now do so at our Epilia Ixelles Louise center.

To schedule your first free consultation, please contact our telephone reception at 03/830 66 80.

Comfortable, safe laser hair removal

We understand the importance of maintaining your comfort during laser sessions. This is why we have invested in cutting-edge technology that allows us to cool the skin during the treatment, thereby reducing the tingling sensation and heat associated with the laser.

This innovative equipment guarantees a more comfortable and pleasant experience while ensuring optimal results over the long term.

Are there any contraindications for YAG laser treatment?

  • It is important to make the distinction between naturally dark skin and tanned skin. Any recent tanning (less than 2 weeks) represents a contraindication for hair removal using the Nd:YAG laser, or any kind of laser system, so as to avoid the risk of skin burns.
  • No treatment can be performed on pregnant women.
  • Areas presenting infectious inflammation cannot be treated.
  • Tattooed areas (or permanent make-up) are not suitable for laser treatment. Only the adjacent area can be treated, so as to preserve the tattoo or permanent make-up.

Pre-YAG laser session recommendations

  • Certain medications can make the skin more sensitive, consequently it is important to mention them before the session.
  • Hair must not have been removed in the area to be treated (waxing, electric epilator, tweezers or hair removal cream) in the 4 weeks prior to the session (2 weeks for the face).
  • Shaving is not advised between sessions.
  • It is appropriate to shave or clip hair a few days before the session so that the hair is short (maximum 2 mm). Women should not shave the face or hormone-dependent areas or fuzzy/downy areas.
  • The skin must be free from any cosmetic products.
  • Please avoid wearing new, unwashed clothing for the week prior to treatment.

Preparation and the laser treatment session

Your technician will mark out the area to be treated with a white pencil so that nothing is missed. You will be given protective glasses to wear during the laser treatment session. The technician will pass the Nd:YAG laser over the entire area defined in advance.

The end of the treatment session

After the treatment, you will receive a moisturising cream to be applied immediately. Redness and slight bruising may appear but will disappear quickly. Payment is made at the end of the treatment session and you will set the date for your next treatment with the technician.

Payment

For your convenience, all our Epilia centres are equipped with Bancontact machines. Payment is always made at the end of the session and we never ask for payment in advance for Yag laser hair removal sessions not yet completed.

After the treatment session

In the event that you experience an intense and persistent sensation of heat, please contact us. It is essential that the area treated is kept hydrated during the days following the session. The hair follicle will be ejected in the 3 weeks following treatment, and you can assist the process with gentle exfoliation. Avoid exposing the area treated to the sun for a period of one week.

Length of a hair removal treatment session with the YAG laser

The length of the Nd:YAG laser hair removal session varies according to the size of the area to be treated. As a general rule, the larger the area, the longer the treatment takes. For smaller areas, like the upper lip or underarms, you can expect about fifteen minutes of treatment.

Here are some recommendations and precautions for after your laser session:

  • Ensure that you moisturise the area treated intensively 2-3 times per day for 3 days following the session. Ideally use a neutral, unperfumed moisturiser. It is essential that you maintain this level of hydration throughout the treatment.
  • Avoid using abrasive exfoliants.
  • The hair follicle will usually be eliminated in the 3 weeks following each of your treatments. We recommend that you exfoliate 10-15 days after your session.
  • If you have your underarms treated with the laser, avoid using an alcohol-based deodorant on this area for 3 days.
  • Avoid any excessive exposure to heat (showers, hot baths, hammam, sauna) for 3 days.
  • No sun exposure for a period of one week.

some recommendations and precautions after laser session

Note:
Laser hair removal for dark skin does not work effectively on white or grey hair as they do not contain melanin. Similarly, mucous membranes and areas of peach fuzz have less satisfactory results.

It is important to emphasise that we are talking more about everyday comfort during laser hair removal treatments for men, patients under 30 years old, hormone-dependent areas of the body, as well as any patient faced with hormonal imbalances.
